Livin' on the Edge of the American DreamRR

This song was originally written in 1993 after watching newscasts regarding the Great Flood of Iowa and the inspiration, grit and strength of the rural communities in coping with the disaster. Recently, because of new tools in audio production such as AI, I have been able to resurrect melodies and lyrics that I have dragged around for decades. --------------------------------------------------- Rockin' on the front porch Sippin' iced tea With the woman and the kids and the dog and me Powers gone out Lamp and candles for our light The wood stove is lit and it'll get us through the night It’s been raining all night It’s been raining all day Rain, rain, won’t you go away But I know if it does It’ll be slow to come again 'Til the ground's rock hard and all the crops are dead Living on the edge Of the American dream Mother Nature’s cruel hand Has got me to think There’s nothing you can do but to live for today And the life we live is much better than the pay Truck's mired deep in what used to be my yard Tractors in a shed moated in with the barn 1/2 day before dawn The wind is starting to howl Sky’s turning green, and thunder’s growlin' loud other than the Lord there is noone you can call We’ve seen fire, wind and flood and somehow managed through them all We’ve dug deep and dug out when it seemed all hope was gone Come the mornin’ light, we will still carry on Living on the edge Of the American dream Mother Nature’s cruel hand Has got me to think There’s nothing more to do but live for today And the life we live is much better than the pay We don’t ask for much Just a little grace Some peace in the wind a sky that holds its place But even if it don’t We ain’t backing away Lord give us strength in this mess and the clay Living on the edge Of the American dream Mother Nature’s cruel hand Has got me to think There’s nothing you can do but to live for today And the life we live is much better than the pay So, Im Rockin' on the front porch Sippin' warm tea With the woman and the kids and the dog and me In the morning start again, it's a brand new day and the life we live is much better than the pay.
